According to Born a Crime, Trevor Noah reveals the essential role of language, which contributed to the creation of the writer's success.
Throughout the book, the comedian writer has exposed so many stories about his childhood with his mom to the readers.
The message found therein is the way that language has supported the author so that he could cope with living under Apartheid. Language assists Trevor Noah to apply books as a method to build-up an attitude, open up conversations to create relationships and convert troubles into benefits.
As was mentioned in the previous paragraph, books have an enormous impact on the author's thinking and behavior. On the other hand, his intelligence does not only come from reading books but also understanding books. Since he was a young child, his mom created as many opportunities as she could to help him to be closer to books. Whenever the author finished any books, his mom forced him to dig deeper into the inner meaning by asking, "What does the passage mean? What does it mean to you? How do you apply it to your life?" (Noah 68). That method plays a crucial role in the broadening of Trevor's horizons. At the time he makes an effort to analyze the book, he understands its inner message and considers whether he is in agreement with it or against it. In truth, the more time he spends to interfere with the books, the more knowledge he will receive. Understanding the book means understanding its valuable lesson and also disagreeable one so that the comedian writer could choose the experiences that he would like to carry with him during his lifetime. Thanks to the miracle of books, although he spends his life in a low-grade environment, his attitude is still shining bright. Even though the author makes friends with those who are not educated well enough or lives with Abel, an abusive man, there is one thing that the author knows for sure. He would never become those kinds of people. Books from his perspective and train him to be a better version of himself.
Moving on now to consider the power of language. Based on the psychology aspect, people tend to have a better feeling for those who speak the same native language with them rather than those who do not. As a result, language can either create or destroy any relationships. Due to that fact, Apartheid's rule was to "... make sure we were separated not just physically but by language as well" (Noah 49). This is quite an understandable tactic that Apartheid applied to its citizens. By grouping people into small groups based on their language, the government reassures that it has more chance to continue to stand still. People who speak different languages believe that they are not the same even though they live in the same country. They were fooled for hating each other. As a consequence, they would never have any thoughts about standing with other citizens to confront the government. In their perspective, there is no reason for them to be nice to the other people who don't have the similarity voice with them. On the other hand, Apartheid also does not give its citizens the chance to get out of the tactic. Students were taught in their regional languages, which proves that they cannot learn the other ones. Thus far, the thesis has proved that language held an essential factor in forming a relationship.
Last but not least, language supports the author to convert troubles into opportunities. As a result of being a mixed child, Trevor got into so many troubles with the other kids because he does not look like them. However, as he grew up, he took languages as a tool to get out of those troubles and realized, "I wasn't popular, but I wasn't an outcast. I was everywhere with everybody, and at the same time, I was all by myself" (Noah 141). The author took advantage of his humor and the ability to understand several African languages so that he could make friends with other groups of people. Besides, when the writer was a child, he learned from his mom about being a multiple language person, which later helped him to avoid being bullied because he was understanding those people's plans and replying to their language.
Through this situation, it is proved that people are welcome one that tends to find a way to be like them. However, no matter how hard one tries to be, there is no chance to become a part of it, but a guest. The separation is still in control, but there is a hint, which predicts that it can be eliminated. If all of the groups decide to act like the other groups in a specific way, they will welcome each other to their world.
This topic has revealed that language could convert troubles into advantages and reverse, depending on the way people decide to live and the way they catch their opportunities when it comes.
Throughout the passage, language has been shown as one of the most powerful factors. Due to the appearance of it, humans could find a way to express themselves. With Trevor Noah, the writer recognized the strength of language and applied it to almost all aspects of life.
Thanks to the written language, the comedian was able to build up his attitude, learn so many experiences, and convey his experiences to the readers. Thanks to the oral language, the host show could create so many relationships during his lifetime. Last but not least, thanks to the general language, all the troubles were converted into opportunities. Language can create both advantages and disadvantages. To sum up, one should understand and use language smartly to achieve a positive outcome.
